Decant Treatment Systems technology is a lever, an accelerator, a catalyst.

 

Our patented Bio-Electric technology disintegrates organic cells by rupturing the cell membranes - it kills pathogens,  and enhances existing processes for digestion, dewatering, odor management nitrogen and phosphorous removal.

The Innovation

The system uses precisely managed electrical pulses to rupture cells, making them available for biogas production in the digester.

  • The technology and know-how was developed by Decant Treatment Systems and is covered by US Patents 6,344,349 B1 and 2014/0318950 A1.

  • This is most closely described as electroporation – a microbiology technique in which an electrical field is applied to cells in order to increase the permeability of the cell membrane. 

  • Electroporation has been used since the 1970’s but mostly in medical and laboratory applications.   Its use in industry has been limited because of the relatively high amounts of energy necessary for the process to work. 

  • Our innovation is being able to get very similar results to electroporation but with orders of magnitude less energy.

Decant Treatment System’s patented Bio-Electric treatment system represents a new approach to lysing cells and treating organic liquid wastes. The system uses precisely managed electrical pulses to rupture cells with break-through energy efficiency and throughput.  Bio-Electric technology can be inserted into existing wastewater treatment infrastructures at a variety of points to improve performance, capacity and efficiency. 

More than 20 years of trials and experience leads us to conclude the following are viable applications for the core DTS technologies:

Waste liquid is pumped through a patented system of highly engineered tubes, where a precisely shaped electrical pulse flows across the liquid between electrodes. The calibrated electrical charge ruptures the walls of organic cells, destroying pathogens and dramatically altering and improving the composition of the liquid waste.
