The Innovation
The system uses precisely managed electrical pulses to rupture cells, making them available for biogas production in the digester.
The technology and know-how was developed by Decant Treatment Systems and is covered by US Patents 6,344,349 B1 and 2014/0318950 A1.
This is most closely described as electroporation – a microbiology technique in which an electrical field is applied to cells in order to increase the permeability of the cell membrane.
Electroporation has been used since the 1970’s but mostly in medical and laboratory applications. Its use in industry has been limited because of the relatively high amounts of energy necessary for the process to work.
Our innovation is being able to get very similar results to electroporation but with orders of magnitude less energy.
